“Chicago-based artist D. Lammie-Hanson spent eight months creating an 8 ft x 12 ft silverpoint artwork title "Dared To Be Black and Shining" depicting a moment in Black life in Harlem, inspired by her childhood memories. Lammie-Hanson is known for using ancient silverpoint technique from the Renaissance and Gothic Periods to create finely rendered portraits, and her artwork features tenement buildings and storefronts that contribute to the narrative of Black life in Harlem. "First Haircut at Mr. George's", which took 6 weeks to execute, was the test drawing for "Dared to be Black and Shining".
