Artist Statement: American’t is an installation piece that memorializes the lives and lived experiences of Black children/youth across space and time in the United States of America. Made with plastic lacing–a craft art material that children commonly use to make keychains and friendship bracelets–American’t aspires to amplify what activist Ayọ (Opal) Tometi has described as the “urgent moral and legal crisis over the safety, liberty, and well-being of Black young people” everywhere.
